Color in Presentations: Building a Palette That Works

Colour is the fastest way to make a deck feel either polished or chaotic. Most founder decks suffer from too many colours used without purpose. A disciplined palette instantly raises the perceived quality of your slides. Here is how to build one.

Start with your brand, but simplify

If you have brand colours, begin there, but you rarely need all of them on every slide. Choose one primary colour, one or two neutrals, and a single accent for emphasis. A deck does not need your full brand rainbow to feel on-brand.

Use one accent for emphasis

Reserve a bright accent colour for the things you want to stand out: a key number, a highlighted bar, a call to action. If everything is colourful, nothing draws the eye. The accent works precisely because the rest of the slide is restrained.

Lean on neutrals

Most of your deck should live in neutrals: a dark for text, a light for backgrounds, and a grey or two for secondary elements. Neutrals create the calm canvas that lets your accent and your content stand out. Decks that feel premium are usually mostly neutral.

Mind contrast and accessibility

Text must contrast strongly with its background. Light grey on white might look elegant on your screen and vanish on a projector. High contrast is not just accessible, it is more persuasive because it is effortless to read.

Give colours consistent meaning

If green means growth on one chart, do not let it mean something else two slides later. Consistent colour meaning helps the audience read your data without re-learning your system each slide.

Avoid colour as decoration

Colour should carry meaning or hierarchy, not just fill space. Random colourful shapes and gradients make a deck look busy and dated. When a colour is not doing a job, remove it.

The test

Count the colours on a typical slide. If it is more than three or four, you are probably decorating. Strip back until every colour has a reason to be there.
