PowerPoint vs Google Slides vs Keynote for Founders
Founders waste real time debating which presentation tool to use. The honest answer: all three can produce a great deck, and the right choice depends on how you work. Here is a practical comparison.
PowerPoint: the universal standard
PowerPoint is the default for investor and corporate decks for one big reason: everyone can open it, and it is what most investors expect to receive. It offers the deepest design control and the widest template ecosystem. The downside is that collaboration is clunkier than Google Slides unless you use the cloud version.
Google Slides: the collaboration king
If multiple people edit the deck or you live in Google Workspace, Slides is hard to beat. Real-time collaboration, comments, and version history are excellent. The trade-off is less design finesse and fewer advanced formatting options. For fast-moving teams iterating together, it often wins.
Keynote: the design favourite
Keynote produces beautiful results with the least effort, thanks to elegant defaults and smooth animations. Designers love it. The catch is that it is Apple-only and creates friction when you share with PowerPoint users, so decks often need exporting and can lose fidelity.
Choose based on workflow, not snobbery
Pick the tool that matches how you actually work: PowerPoint if your audience expects it and you want control, Google Slides if you collaborate heavily, Keynote if you are Apple-native and care most about polish. The tool rarely decides whether a deck is good. The thinking and design do.
Plan for the handoff
Whatever you build in, investors usually want a PDF or PowerPoint. Always be ready to export cleanly without breaking fonts, layouts, or animations. Test the exported file on another machine before you send it.
Do not over-optimise the tool choice
Time spent agonising over tools is better spent on the story and the slides. A great deck in Google Slides beats a mediocre one in Keynote every time.
The test
Can you create, collaborate on, and export your deck without fighting the tool? Then it is the right tool for you.
