The Investor Update Email: Templates and Cadence

The investor update is the most underrated fundraising tool. A consistent monthly update keeps existing investors engaged and turns them into a warm network for your next round. Founders who send great updates raise follow-on capital faster. Here is how to do it.

Send them on a fixed cadence

Monthly is the standard. The exact day matters less than consistency, because predictability is what builds trust. Investors who hear from you only when you need money feel used; investors who hear from you every month feel like partners.

Lead with the metrics that matter

Open with your core numbers: revenue, growth, cash, and runway. Keep the same metrics each month so readers can track the trend. A simple table or a one-line dashboard at the top respects busy people and sets an honest tone.

Share wins and lowlights honestly

Report both what went well and what did not. Founders who only share wins lose credibility, and they miss the chance to get help. A candid lowlight section, such as "churn ticked up, here is what we are doing," signals maturity and invites useful input.

Make your asks specific

The best updates end with concrete asks: intros to a named type of customer, a hire you are seeking, advice on a decision. Vague "let us know if you can help" gets nothing. A specific ask is how your investors actually become useful.

Keep it skimmable

Use short sections, clear headers, and bold key numbers. Investors back many companies and read fast. An update that takes two minutes gets read; one that takes fifteen gets archived.

A simple structure

A reliable template: a short summary and metrics at the top, then wins, then challenges, then asks, then a brief "what is next." Reuse the same skeleton every month so writing it takes 30 minutes, not an afternoon.

Why it pays off at fundraising time

When you open your next round, investors who have followed your monthly updates already understand your trajectory. The narrative is pre-sold. Cold investors take meetings; warm ones write cheques.

The test

If you stopped sending updates, would your investors notice? If yes, you have built the relationship that makes the next raise easier.
